If you're looking into working some sort of art into your writing, but you're fearful of how it will turn out, or if it'll be overbearing, there's a pretty simple solution for that.
Many well-known authors include some sort of art in their works. Shel Silverstein added his own drawings to his poems. JK Rowling does this as well in the Harry Potter series. Jonathan Safran-Foer is also famous for including art in his work, though he does it through more eclectic ways, such as blacking out whole pages or overlapping a single word dozens of times.
Yet, you don't have to include a whole page of art to your work to include drawings. JK Rowling put simple photos at the beginning of her chapters. Though that isn't to say that art wasn't a huge part of her writing process. In fact, she used diagrams and drawings to keep up with her plots and how her characters looked.
Actually, even after she was done writing the series, Rowling wasn't done with the art surrounding Harry Potter. She wanted to give her readers further insight into the world she created, which she did by submitting drawings and artwork through her website Pottermore, which has now become WizardingWorld.com
