Art Needs Encouragement

When most adults think of a career in art, they tend to look at it with a negative view. My own father majored in graphic design, yet turned his nose up at the industry and chose a career in religion instead. One of the main reasons for this abandonment of art is because adults don't think they can make a career in art last.
Perhaps they don't think their art is good enough, or perhaps they're struggling too much to pay their bills as an artist.
If we need art so much, shouldn't this be different?
Shouldn't we be teaching our children about the benefits of art, or at least teaching them to respect the craft?
But how can we, when we don't even respect it?
Artists are the backbone of our world, and provide most of our distractions from every day life.
If we don't allow our kids the freedom to express how they feel, then the world we know may grow to learn to live without the careers artists hold that give us our sense of escape.
Without artists we'd have no video games, paintings, cartoons or comic books, picture books for kids, or even graphic ads.
Maybe it's judgment that keeps kids from pursuing art past elementary school. Or maybe, like me, they're too used to hearing from their parents that you can't make a career out of art.
Why hold our kids back? They could be the next great artist. Or, by using their art, could become the next great author or comic book creator.
